Fire Pit Safety, Procedures & Policies
Hostelling International-USA & Massachusetts
Retreat Center
Safety of guests and the property is our number one concern. The
fire pit is designed to provide a safe environment in which to enjoy
a fire outdoors. Please use common sense in building a fire in the
fire pit. The pit is adjacent to 100 acres of forest. An uncontrolled
fire could have enormous consequences.
- There will be a fee of $20/night to use the pit which will
include firewood.
- A single, adult individual must be appointed as "keeper" of
the fire. This person will be responsible for maintaining the fire
at safe levels and making sure the fire is completely extinguished
before retiring for the evening.
- The fire must not be left unattended.
- Charcoal starter may be used to start the fire but may not be
added to the fire once flames are evident or to "speed up the
fire". Under no circumstances may gasoline, lantern fuel or any
other volatile fuel be used as a fire starter or accelerant.
- Please do not stack more than two layers of wood in the pit at
any given time. Additional wood may be added as the fire burns
down as long as the two layer limit is maintained.
- The fire must not be left unattended.
- Only firewood provided by Friendly Crossways may be burned in
the fire pit.
- Please do not throw garbage, glass, metal, or any other
material in the fire.
- Pressure treated lumber, plywood, particle board, OSB board
and other manufactured lumber products contain many harmful
chemicals and may not under any circumstances be burned in the
fire pit.
- The fire must be completely extinguished no later than
midnight. We recommend that only one layer of wood be burning at
11pm so that the fire will go out by itself by midnight.
- Do not remove ashes from the firepit. If the pit needs to be
cleared of ash, Friendly Crossways personnel will handle this
task.
- Did we mention: The fire must not be left unattended.
